About Dowa Rock Temple
The Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya hides in a wooded bend of the Ella–Badulla road, so easy to miss that thousands drive past its greatest treasure daily: a 12-metre standing Buddha carved in high relief directly into the gneiss cliff face, serene and - like Sasseruwa far to the north - intriguingly unfinished, its lower body still emerging from the rock. Tradition ties the temple to King Walagamba, who sheltered here from Indian invaders two thousand years ago and, legend insists, began a secret escape tunnel whose sealed mouth is still pointed out inside. The cave shrine glows with Kandyan-era murals - processions, Jataka tales, and cosmological maps in ochre and lamp-black - and a gilded reclining Buddha rests beneath the painted rock. Ten minutes from Ella's cafes, it restores the sense of age and sanctity that the resort strip has traded away.
