Diyatalawa is Sri Lanka's most unexpected historical footnote wearing its prettiest setting: this breezy bowl in the Uva hills became, in 1900, a vast camp for some five thousand Boer prisoners of war shipped across the Indian Ocean - the origin of the garrison town that still hosts the military academies whose white-uniformed cadets give 'Little England' drills beneath the eucalyptus. The visitor's summit is Fox Hill, the bare rise above the camp crowned with a giant white name-sign, where the panorama rolls across the Uva basin's patchwork to Namunukula's nine peaks - and where, every April, the Fox Hill Supercross turns the slopes into the island's loudest motorsport carnival, buggies and bikes hammering the dirt circuit before crowds in their tens of thousands. Off-season, it is all larks and wind. Pair the hill with Haputale's edge and Bandarawela's tea for the gentlest Uva triangle.
