About Idalgashinna
Idalgashinna is the hill railway's most poetic address: a tiny 1893 station strung along a knife-edge ridge at 1,615 metres, where the line runs literally between climates - on one side the misty, mossy wet-zone slopes tumbling toward the southern plains; on the other, the drier golden light of Uva. Trains pause here between Haputale and Ohiya on the most tunnel-riddled stretch of the network (fourteen tunnels close by), and the classic hill-country experience is to walk the tracks - Idalgashinna to Ohiya, or back toward Haputale - through pine, tea, and cloud, stepping aside for the occasional unhurried train. On clear mornings the platform view stretches to the south coast; by ten the clouds boil up the escarpment and swallow the station whole, which is somehow just as good. No town, one shop, endless atmosphere: the connoisseur's stop on the line.
