Lipton's Seat is the throne of Ceylon tea country: the hilltop lookout above Haputale where Sir Thomas Lipton, the Victorian tea baron, liked to sit and survey the thousands of emerald acres that fed his global empire. The classic approach is on foot from the Dambatenne Tea Factory (built by Lipton in 1890), a 7-kilometre lane climbing through immaculately clipped tea terraces where pluckers work the slopes with astonishing speed - one of the most beautiful easy walks in Sri Lanka. From the seat itself, on a clear dawn, the view sweeps over four provinces, down across the Uva basin and all the way to the southern plains; by mid-morning the clouds usually claim it. A small cafe serves tea grown within sight of your cup. Combine the walk with a Dambatenne factory tour to follow the leaf from bush to chest.
