About Wangedigala
Wangedigala is the hill country's favourite night out: a bare, wind-brushed summit ridge above Kalupahana whose name ('mortar rock') comes from the deep pothole basins weathered into its crown, and whose position - directly across the valley from Bambarakanda Falls - makes it the natural grandstand for Sri Lanka's tallest waterfall. The climb from the Kalupahana side takes two to three sweaty hours through pine and grassland, sharing its first stretch with the Devil's Staircase route, and opens onto a ridge of golden grass where campers pitch for the island's classic tent sunrise: cloud seas filling the V of the valley, Bambarakanda's silver thread on the far wall, and the southern plains glittering beyond the mountain gates. Day-trippers get the same theatre without the tent. It is the approachable end of serious hill hiking - big reward, honest effort, no permits.
