Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, 'Sacred Footprint') rises 2,243 metres in the Central Highlands and is one of the world's most sacred mountains. Pilgrims and trekkers climb the 5,500 stone steps year-round, but the experience peaks during the season (December–May) when thousands gather for dawn. Local Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim communities revere the distinctive triangular shadow the peak casts at sunrise onto the mist below - a phenomenon visible for only a few weeks each year. The steep climb takes 2–3 hours; most start between 2–4am to catch sunrise. The forest en route is pristine cloud-forest, and the sense of purpose shared by thousands of pilgrims of all faiths creates a unique spiritual atmosphere.
