About Ambewela Farms
Ambewela, on the misty plateau between Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains, is the most un-Sri Lankan landscape on the island: close-cropped green pastures rolling to pine shelterbelts, Friesian cows grazing in the cold, and morning frost on the grass - no wonder everyone calls it 'Little New Zealand'. The working Ambewela and New Zealand farms open to visitors, who come to walk the paddocks, watch the mechanised milking parlour in action, meet calves, goats, and rabbits, and - the real point for many - drink outrageously fresh milk and eat the farms' famous yoghurt and cheese at the outlet shop. At 1,800 metres the air is champagne-crisp, and the Ambewela stretch of the Kandy–Badulla railway, curving through the pastures past the highland stations, is one of the prettiest on the line. It slots neatly into a Horton Plains day.
