About Hakgala Botanical Garden
Hakgala is Sri Lanka's high-altitude garden, terraced up a mountainside at 1,700 metres a short drive from Nuwara Eliya. Founded in 1861 to trial cinchona (the quinine tree) and later tea, it evolved into a showcase for temperate flora that feels startlingly un-tropical: rose gardens at their best in the March–May flush, cedar and cypress groves, tree-fern gullies, and a montane orchid collection, all backed by the cloud-forest cliffs of Hakgala rock. In Ramayana tradition these slopes were part of Ashok Vatika, the pleasure garden where Sita was held - the Seetha Amman temple stands just below the gates. Purple-faced langurs amble across the lawns in the early morning, and the upper terraces open to views across the Uva valleys. It pairs perfectly with Nuwara Eliya's colonial town for a gentle hill-country day.
