Gregory Lake is the bright, breezy heart of Nuwara Eliya's holiday mood. Created in 1873 when Governor Sir William Gregory dammed the Thalagala stream - part reservoir, part playground for the British hill station - it now mirrors Pidurutalagala's forested wall and the town's gabled rooftops across 91 hectares of cold, clean water. The lakeside park is Sri Lanka's favourite family promenade: swan pedal boats and jet-boats stitch wakes across the surface, ponies amble the shore path, kiosks dispense sweet corn and ice cream against all climatic logic, and in April 'season' the lawns host horse-and-flower crowds straight out of the colonial calendar. Come early on a clear morning for the postcard reflection shot and near-empty paths; come at golden hour for the carnival at full hum. Either way, it is the gentlest hour in the hill country.
