Pidurutalagala - Mount Pedro to the British - is the roof of Sri Lanka: 2,524 metres, rising directly behind Nuwara Eliya in a great forested wall. Uniquely for a national high point, you can reach the summit by vehicle: a winding Air Force-controlled road (passports checked, no stopping en route) climbs through the island's largest remaining cloud forest, where windswept, moss-draped trees shelter sambar deer, wild boar, and even the odd leopard. At the top, beside the communication masts that crown the peak, a viewing area looks out over an astonishing sweep of the hill country - Nuwara Eliya's lake glinting below, the plains of Uva beyond, and on the clearest mornings the unmistakable pyramid of Adam's Peak floating on the horizon. Go at dawn before the clouds build; by mid-morning the summit is often inside them.
