The central highlands of Sri Lanka are covered in vast tea estates, a landscape so iconic it's almost a character in itself. The view from Nuwara Eliya, Ella, or the train route - seemingly endless verdant slopes - is from the plantations that have been producing world-famous Ceylon tea for over 150 years. Many estates welcome visitors for tours, where you'll learn the art of tea cultivation (harvesting only the top two leaves and bud), the fermentation and drying process, and the grading system. Most include a tea tasting where you'll sample different grades from the same plantation. Some places let you pick your own tea leaves - harder work than it looks.
