The Seetha Amman Kovil at Seetha Eliya, a few kilometres from Nuwara Eliya on the Hakgala road, is the emotional heart of Sri Lanka's Ramayana trail. Tradition identifies this stream-side spot as Ashok Vatika, the garden grove where the demon king Ravana held Sita captive, and where she prayed daily for Rama's coming; the temple beside the brook is said to be the only shrine in the world dedicated to Sita herself. Pilgrims point to curious circular depressions in the rock across the stream as the footprints of the giant monkey-god Hanuman. Rebuilt in vivid Dravidian style, the kovil's rainbow-coloured gopuram crowded with Ramayana figures makes a startling sight against the misty tea slopes.
