In a forest clearing near the village of Maligawila, far off the standard circuits, stands one of the great sculptures of the ancient world: an 11.5-metre Buddha carved in the 7th century from a single slab of crystalline limestone - the tallest free-standing ancient Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Toppled and broken in later centuries, it lay in pieces among the roots until a painstaking restoration raised it again in 1991; the seams of that rescue only deepen its dignity. A ten-minute walk through the trees leads to its companion piece, the Dambegoda Bodhisattva - a colossal image of Avalokitesvara on its own stepped terrace, once gilded and jewel-eyed. Together they mark the monastery of Pathma Vihara, raised by a 7th-century prince.
