About Diyaluma Falls
Diyaluma plunges 220 metres off the Koslanda plateau in a single silver ribbon - Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall and, for adventurous travellers, its most exciting. The magic is at the top: a hike of about an hour (or a tuk-tuk ride up the back road plus a short walk) brings you to Upper Diyaluma, a staircase of natural rock pools linked by smaller cascades, several sitting right at the fall's lip like infinity pools built by geology. Swimming to the smooth rock edge and peering down the 220-metre drop to the valley floor is a heart-in-mouth thrill - done sensibly, in dry weather, away from the outflow current. The bottom of the falls, right beside the Wellawaya–Koslanda road, offers the full-height view for free. Go early: by late morning the pools draw crowds on weekends.
