About Buduruwagala Rock Carvings
Deep in the dry-zone scrub south of Wellawaya, a curving wall of rock rises from the forest carved with seven monumental figures - Buduruwagala, 'the rock of Buddha images'. The central standing Buddha, at 15 metres, is the tallest in Sri Lanka, still bearing traces of its original stuccoed robe and painted surface. Flanking it stand bodhisattvas and attendant figures, including Avalokitesvara and a rare depiction linked to Maitreya, revealing the Mahayana currents that flowed through the island around the 10th century. The site is reached by a short walk past a lily-covered tank alive with birds, and its jungle setting - no walls, no crowds, just carved stone and forest sounds - makes it one of the most atmospheric ancient places in the country. It pairs naturally with Diyaluma Falls or a Yala-bound journey.
