About Kataragama
Kataragama is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka: a jungle-edged temple town where Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda people all venerate the same sacred precinct. At its heart stands the Maha Devale, shrine of the god Kataragama - identified by Hindus as Skanda or Murugan - alongside a mosque and the ancient Kiri Vehera dagoba, a layout that makes shared devotion physically visible. Every evening puja, drummers and trumpet players lead lines of pilgrims carrying fruit offerings through incense smoke - electric with devotion, welcoming to respectful visitors. During the Esala festival (July–August), the town becomes one of Asia's most intense spiritual spectacles, with fire-walking, kavadi dancing, and acts of penance drawing hundreds of thousands. Many pilgrims still complete the journey on foot along the ancient Pada Yatra route from the east coast. Yala National Park is on the doorstep.
