Kiri Vehera - the 'milk stupa' - rises pure white at the calm northern end of Kataragama's sacred precinct, the Buddhist pole of the multi-faith holy city. Tradition counts it among the sixteen great pilgrimage places (Solosmasthana): the Buddha, visiting on his third journey to the island, is said to have met the local king Mahaghosha here, and the stupa - raised in the centuries after, its present form credited to King Mahasena of Kataragama - marks where he sat in meditation. The walk to it is part of its meaning: pilgrims proceed from the Maha Devale of the god Kataragama along a sand avenue of frangipani and vendors' stalls, faith shifting register from drumming exuberance to lamp-lit calm as the white dome grows ahead. On festival nights the avenue becomes a river of white-clad devotees. Circle the stupa at dusk, lamps guttering against the whitewash, and Kataragama's layered devotion resolves into simple peace.
