About Kirinda
Kirinda is a small fishing village with an outsized place in Sri Lankan legend. Its temple, perched on a whale-backed rock above the beach, marks the spot where princess Viharamahadevi came ashore - sacrificed to the sea by her father to appease the gods, she landed safely here and went on to marry King Kavan Tissa and mother the great King Dutugemunu. Climb the rock past the dagoba and Buddha statue for one of the south coast's finest panoramas: dunes and surf running east toward Yala, and on clear days the lighthouses of the Great and Little Basses reefs on the horizon - legendary dive sites with centuries of shipwrecks, for experts in the calmest weeks. The beach below is wild and beautiful (currents make swimming risky), and Yala's Palatupana gate is just up the road, making Kirinda a soulful add-on to any safari stay.
