About Ridiyagama Safari Park
Ridiyagama, near Hambantota in the deep south, is Sri Lanka's first drive-through safari park: 500 acres of open-range zones that visitors cross in caged park buses (or their own vehicles on some circuits), watching African lions laze on rock piles, elephant groups wander open parkland, and zones of zebra, deer, and other species graze fence-free around the vehicle. Opened in 2016 and run by the national zoological department, it flips the traditional zoo - the animals roam, the people are enclosed - and for families with children it delivers guaranteed close encounters that wild national parks cannot promise. It is, of course, a managed park rather than wilderness: think of it as a complement to a real safari, not a substitute. Combined with nearby Bundala or a Yala trip, it rounds out a family wildlife circuit in the south.
