About Yala National Park
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's premier wildlife destination, home to one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. The park covers over 979 km² of dry woodland, grasslands, rocky outcrops, and lagoons teeming with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Block 1 is the classic leopard territory, while the quieter blocks reward patient safari-goers with sightings free of jeep crowds. The park's landscape is remarkably varied - within a single game drive you can pass from scrub jungle to open plains to a wild, dune-backed coastline where elephants sometimes wander onto the beach. Jeep safaris run at dawn and dusk, when the big cats are most active.
