About Kudumbigala Monastery
Kudumbigala is where Sri Lankan monasticism still looks as it did two millennia ago: a 2nd-century BC forest hermitage spread through a fantasia of rock domes and caves on the edge of the Kumana wilderness, its two hundred drip-ledged shelters once home to meditating monks fleeing the world - as a handful still do. The climb winds past inscriptions and rock pools to the summit, where the Sudharshana Chaitya breaks all the rules: a tall cylindrical dagoba, unique in the country, raised like a stone lighthouse on the highest dome. The panorama is the east at its wildest - unbroken jungle to Kumana's lagoons and the ocean, with elephants and leopards below and white-bellied sea eagles at eye level. On the Panama–Kumana road twenty minutes from Arugam Bay's surf, it pairs sunrise solitude with the beach day to follow.
