Muhudu Maha Viharaya - the 'great sea temple' - rises straight out of the sweeping dunes north of Pottuvil, ten minutes from Arugam Bay's surf: weathered standing Buddha and bodhisattva statues, brick stupa mounds, and pillar stumps half-swallowed by golden sand, with the Indian Ocean breaking just beyond. East-coast tradition claims this as the true landing place of Queen Viharamahadevi - the princess set adrift to appease the sea gods - and whether or not the southern town of Kirinda disputes the honour, the setting argues eloquently: a two-millennia-old sanctuary holding its ground between desert-like dunes and blue water. The statues, standing serene amid the sand's slow siege, are among the most photogenic ancient figures on the island. Come at sunrise before the heat, when the light rakes the dunes, peacocks call from the scrub, and Arugam Bay's crowds are still asleep.
