Sangamankanda Point is the sunrise capital of Sri Lanka on a technicality and an empty beach: the island's easternmost extremity, a low sandy cape between Komari and Akkaraipattu on the coast road north of Arugam Bay, where the first light of every Sri Lankan day makes landfall. Unlike its celebrity siblings - Dondra's lighthouse crowds, Point Pedro's monument - the eastern point does solitude: a marker, the ruins of a small light station, casuarina scrub bending in the constant wind, and kilometres of surf-hammered sand in both directions with rarely another visitor on them. The drive itself is the east at its most open - lagoons, paddy, fishing hamlets recovering their rhythm. Come for dawn (the point's whole argument), swim carefully or not at all, and collect the compass set: Dondra south, Pedro north, Sangamankanda east - the island measured in person.
