Uva Province
About Narangala Peak
Narangala earns its name - 'orange rock' - every clear dawn: the 1,527-metre dome above Hali-Ela and Badulla wears no forest on its upper body, only a pelt of mana grass that the first light sets glowing gold to copper, a summit-sized sunrise lamp visible across half of Uva. The climb is the hill country's most satisfying short expedition: from the tea and jak villages on the Uduwara side, estate tracks and then open ridgeline rise two to three hours through grass shoulder-high in places, with the drop to the Badulu Oya valley growing ever more theatrical. The top is a bare, wind-brushed whaleback - Namunukula across the valley, the Badulla basin's lights fading below, cloud seas on the lucky mornings - and increasingly the island's favourite legal camping summit, tents pitched in the grass for the double show of dusk and dawn. Fire is the grass dome's one enemy; cook cold, carry water, leave gold.
