Laxapana Falls thunders 126 metres down a rock face in the wild country between Hatton and Maskeliya - one of the most powerful waterfalls on the island, on the same Maskeliya Oya waters that drive Sri Lanka's oldest major hydroelectric scheme (the falls' name is borrowed by the power stations, not the other way around). Buddhist tradition holds that the Buddha, journeying to Sri Pada, stopped near here to mend his robe - 'Laxapana' is popularly linked to the rock where he sat. A stepped path descends from the village road to a base viewpoint where the full white wall of the fall fills your vision, spray billowing over the boulders. This is also Adam's Peak country: the falls slot easily into a Hatton–Maskeliya circuit alongside the Castlereagh reservoir's tea-bungalow shores.
