Great Western is the mountain the railway named: the seventh-highest peak in Sri Lanka at 2,212 metres, rising in a great forested pyramid above the Talawakele tea country and christened - like its little station at the base - for the Great Western Railway of distant England by homesick Victorian engineers. The climb is the hill line's best-kept adventure: start at Great Western station (arrive by train for full style points), cross the tracks, and follow estate paths up through the tea to the cloud-forest cap, where a final steep, rooty scramble gains the rock summit - two to three hours up, with the tea country's whole amphitheatre spread below: St. Clair's plunging, Devon threading, the railway curling like dropped ribbon, and on clear days Adam's Peak saluting across the valleys. Mist is the resident hazard and the resident magic; go at dawn, and let the trains time your descent.
