About St. Clair's Falls
St. Clair's Falls earned its nickname 'the Little Niagara of Sri Lanka' for its shape: the Kotmale Oya pours over a broad rock shelf in two neighbouring cataracts - the wide, thundering 'Maha Ella' and the slimmer 'Kuda Ella' - framed perfectly by terraced tea fields. Together with Devon Falls, visible a few kilometres along the same stretch, it turns the A7 highway west of Talawakele into a waterfall gallery: viewing platforms and tea-shop terraces line the road, and the Colombo–Badulla railway rattles right past the falls' brow, giving train travellers one of the journey's great moments. Flow varies since the Upper Kotmale hydro project came online upstream - after good rains, or on scheduled high-flow days, the falls regain their full breadth. Pair the viewpoint with a factory tour at one of the surrounding estates for a classic tea-country afternoon.
