About Kanneliya Forest Reserve
Kanneliya is the largest block of the Kanneliya–Dediyagala–Nakiyadeniya (KDN) forest complex, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve that ranks just behind Sinharaja for biodiversity - and often ahead of it for solitude. An easy 35 kilometres inland from Galle, its well-kept trails climb through dripping lowland rainforest to reward after reward: the multi-tiered Anagimala Falls with its swimmable jungle pool, a giant liana coiled like a sleeping serpent across the path, centuries-old nawada trees with buttress roots taller than a person, and the Kabbale mountain viewpoint above the canopy. Endemic birds, lizards, and torrent frogs live along every stream, and local guides (hired at the entrance) know where the purple-faced langurs feed. Wear leech socks, start early, and you can walk for hours hearing nothing but the forest itself.
