Sera Ella is the Knuckles foothills' best-kept water secret: a ten-metre twin cascade on the Puwakpitiya Oya near Laggala, whose special trick is the wide rock cavern that runs directly behind the falling water - walk in and the world becomes a silver curtain, the roar wrapping around you while you stay (mostly) dry. The name comes from the sera (rock snakehead fish) that throng its pools. The approach is part of the pleasure: a short forest path descends from the Riverston–Pallegama road through pepper and cardamom country, with the fall announcing itself long before it appears. Pools below the cascade invite careful swimming in low flow, and the surrounding Riverston circuit - Pitawala Pathana's grasslands, the Mini World's End cliff, Bambarakiri Ella - fills the rest of a superb off-track day. Weekdays you may share it only with kingfishers.
