Meemure Village

Central Province

About Meemure Village

Meemure is the village at the end of the road - literally. Reached by a single spectacular track that winds over the Knuckles range from Loolwatte, this community of a few hundred people lives beneath the sheer monolith of Lakegala, a rock summit woven into Ramayana legend as one of Ravana's strongholds. Life here still follows older rhythms: paddy terraces worked with buffalo, kitul palm tapping for treacle and jaggery, houses of mud brick and clay tile. Visitors come to walk - to waterfalls and natural rock pools, through cardamom-scented forest, or on the tough scramble toward Lakegala's shoulder - and to stay in simple village homestays, eating rice and curry cooked over wood fires. There is no mobile signal to speak of, which is precisely the point. Come for one night at least; day trips barely scratch it.
