Hunnas Falls drops 64 metres off the flank of the Hunnasgiriya massif above Elkaduwa, in the green knot of hills where the Knuckles foothills meet Kandy's tea and spice country. Fed by mountain streams that stay lively most of the year, the fall pours in a bright ribbon down dark rock into a boulder-strewn pool, with terraced tea and kitul palms framing every view. It is the closest substantial waterfall to Kandy - about an hour's winding drive - and pairs naturally with the turquoise of Sembuwatta Lake ten minutes further on, making the classic Elkaduwa loop. Paths lead to both the base pool and upper vantage points; after strong rain the fall doubles its voice and mist drifts across the estate lanes. The hillside hotel beside it has made the falls famous as a backdrop; the view without the room is free.
