About Riverston
Riverston, a high pass on the Matale–Pallegama road, is the easiest doorway into the wild scenery of the Knuckles range. From the roadside telecom tower, a short trail leads to the Riverston peak and the 'Mini World's End' - a sudden cliff edge where the land drops hundreds of metres to a patchwork of paddies and villages, usually with clouds boiling up the escarpment into your face. Nearby, the Pitawala Pathana plateau spreads a rare montane grassland dotted with endemic plants (walk only the marked paths - the turf is fragile), and the Thelgamu Oya cuts through Sri Lanka's own 'mini' gorge at Sera Ella falls. The pass is famous for wind - at the gap itself it can be hard to stand upright - and for mist that parts theatrically to reveal the views. Cool, green, and still largely local, Riverston is hill country without the crowds.

Travel Tips
Go before 9am - mist usually swallows the views by late morning.
Stick to marked paths on Pitawala Pathana; the grassland is protected.
Bring a windproof layer - the gap is seriously blustery.
