Randenigala completes the Mahaweli's great staircase: downstream of Victoria, its 94-metre embankment impounds the largest reservoir of the entire scheme - a sheet of water so broad it makes its own weather, ringed by the forested slopes of the Randenigala–Rantambe sanctuary. Where Victoria draws the crowds, Randenigala keeps the wildness: the B-road from Kandy to Mahiyangana runs along the reservoir's shoulder through proper wilderness - elephants cross at dusk, and this is the best place on the island to watch black eagles and serpent eagles riding the dam's updrafts at eye level. Viewpoints above the spillway take in the full sweep of water, wall, and mountains; the smaller Rantambe reservoir just below adds a second act.
