About Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli is the east coast at its most postcard-perfect: kilometres of powdery white sand sliding into shallow, glass-clear turquoise water, with the twin humps of Pigeon Island floating a kilometre offshore. The sea here is at its calmest from April to September - reliably flat in the mornings - making it one of the best swimming beaches in Sri Lanka, and boats run constantly to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling with reef sharks and turtles. Development remains low-rise and spread out, so even in season the beach never feels crowded; walk ten minutes and you're alone with the fishing boats. Trincomalee town, with Koneswaram temple and Fort Frederick, is twenty minutes south, and whale-watching boats operate from nearby during the season.
