About Kinniya Bridge
The Kinniya Bridge is infrastructure with a view: at 396 metres the longest bridge in Sri Lanka, opened in 2009 to replace the slow shuttle of ferries that once linked Trincomalee to the Kinniya peninsula across the mouth of the great inner harbour's lagoon system. The crossing earns the stop it invites: below, the tidal water shifts colour over sandbars worked by fishermen with cast nets and stilted traps; seaward, Koddiyar Bay opens toward one of the world's finest natural harbours; and the pedestrian walkways make the span an easy, breezy promenade at sunset when the lagoon goes to bronze and the bridge lights come on. For travellers it is both sight and gateway - Kinniya town's famous hot wells lie just beyond, and the coastal back-route south toward Muttur and the Seruwila stupa starts here. Simple pleasures: a bridge, a big sky, grilled prawns from the stalls at the far end.
