About Kanniya Hot Springs
The Kanniya hot springs have been easing pilgrims' bones for as long as anyone can say: seven square wells in a walled enclosure outside Trincomalee, each a slightly different warmth (bath-pleasant rather than scalding), drawn bucket by bucket and poured over the head in the time-honoured style. Legend gives them a dramatic birth - King Ravana, grieving his mother, struck the earth seven times with his sword (or performed her rites here), and seven springs rose; Hindu devotees still make Kanniya a station of remembrance for ancestors, and the ruins of an ancient monastery at the gate add a Buddhist layer to the shared shrine. Visits are cheerfully communal: families sluicing, children shrieking at the warm-cold alternation, attendants keeping order in the queue. It is less spa than living ritual - go with a sarong, join the bucket line, and leave lighter. Trincomalee's beaches lie fifteen minutes east.
