Koneswaram Kovil crowns Swami Rock, a cliff plunging forty sheer metres into the blue of Trincomalee's harbour mouth - a temple site so old it was praised in Tamil devotional poetry over a thousand years ago, and so storied it is counted among the Pancha Ishwaram, the five ancient abodes of Shiva ringing the island. The medieval temple, once so rich in gilded towers that sailors called it the 'Temple of a Thousand Columns', was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1622; rebuilt in stages since, today's kovil is a living, incense-filled shrine where a towering blue statue of Shiva gazes over the ocean. The approach through Fort Frederick adds spotted deer beneath colonial walls, and the clifftop offers Lover's Leap - a viewpoint over water so deep that blue whales occasionally surface below the temple itself.
