The National Railway Museum at Kadugannawa parks a century and a half of Sri Lankan railway history where it belongs: at the summit of the legendary incline the pioneers blasted through the mountains to reach Kandy in 1867. In the old railway yard beside the station, lovingly kept veterans stand in ranks - steam locomotives that hauled tea to Colombo, early diesels, wooden sleeping cars, inspection trolleys, cranes, and the workshop machinery that kept them alive - most open enough to peer into, all photogenic in the mountain light. Signal levers, station bells, and route maps fill the indoor gallery. Beside the museum rises the 1832 Dawson Tower, memorial to the engineer of the Colombo–Kandy road who died before his masterpiece opened. For families and rail romantics breaking the Colombo–Kandy journey, it is a perfectly judged hour - and the highway viewpoints of the Kadugannawa pass are right outside.
