Nelligala is what happens when devotion meets a perfect hilltop: a gleaming modern temple complex, opened in the 2010s on a 600-metre summit west of Kandy, whose golden stupas, golden bo-tree railings, and ranks of white Buddhas seem to float above a full-circle panorama of the Kandyan hills - ridge upon blue ridge to the Knuckles and, on lucky evenings, a sea of clouds filling the valleys below. It makes no claim to antiquity; its gift is atmosphere and light. Come for sunset: the gold turns molten, the wind carries chanting from the shrine hall, and the terraces fill with families and photographers in equal number.
