Ambuluwawa is Sri Lanka's most vertigo-inducing viewpoint: a white, pagoda-like tower that corkscrews 48 metres into the sky from the summit of a 1,067-metre mountain above Gampola. The tower crowns a 'multi-religious sanctuary' - the hilltop complex includes a Buddhist stupa, Hindu kovil, mosque, and church - and its exterior spiral staircase narrows dramatically as it climbs, until the final loops are barely wide enough for one person gripping the rail. The reward is a full-circle panorama over the central highlands: Kandy's ranges, the Knuckles, tea country falling away to the south, and on clear days even Adam's Peak. The mountain itself is a biodiversity complex with easy forest walks and, frequently, mist that swirls in and out of the view. Not one for vertigo sufferers - unforgettable for everyone else.
