The old Manampitiya bridge is industrial heritage still earning its keep: a long lattice of riveted iron spans striding the Mahaweli east of Polonnaruwa, built in the early twentieth century as a rare double-decker - road traffic once squeezing across the lower deck while trains of the Batticaloa line rumbled overhead, a nerve-testing arrangement locals recall fondly now that a modern road bridge (opened alongside in 2007) has retired the bottom lane. The trains remain: the upper deck still carries the eastern line, and watching a Batticaloa-bound train clatter over the river's brown breadth is the connoisseur's reason to stop. The setting supplies the rest - the Mahaweli sliding out of the Somawathiya wilderness (elephants cross upstream at dusk), fishermen under the piers, and the flood plains stretching green to the horizon.
