Maha Oya's springs are Sri Lanka's hottest: a cluster of wells in the dry-zone scrub near the Maha Oya town where geothermal water rises at temperatures pushing 55°C - the hottest of the island's dozen-odd thermal sites, hot enough at the source wells that bathers mix down to comfort in the cooler pools. The setting is agreeably end-of-the-road: paddies and forest reserve all around (wild elephants water nearby at dusk - heed the signs), a renovated bathing complex of tanks and channels, and a clientele of farming families, long-distance travellers breaking the Kandy–Ampara run, and the occasional geology student with a thermometer. Science reads the springs as deep-circulated groundwater rising along basement fractures; local lore, as ever, prefers Ravana. Either way, a dusk soak with the forest chorus starting up makes this the east's most restorative pit stop - and Gal Oya's boat safaris are an hour on.
