Gal Oya is Sri Lanka's best-kept wildlife secret and the only national park where the classic safari happens by boat. The park wraps around the Senanayake Samudraya, the island's largest reservoir, whose forested islands and drowned valleys create a landscape more African rift lake than South Asian jungle. Gal Oya's signature spectacle is elephants swimming - trunk periscopes up - between the mainland and the islands to feed, a sight found almost nowhere else on Earth. Boat safaris drift close to bathing herds, crocodiles, and islands white with cormorants and pelicans; land safaris and guided walks with Vedda trackers explore the park's grasslands and forest.
