About Maduru Oya National Park
Maduru Oya National Park spreads across nearly 590 km² of low dry-zone country between Polonnaruwa and the eastern plains, created to protect the catchments of the giant Mahaweli irrigation reservoirs and the wildlife displaced by their creation. It feels like deep Sri Lanka: whaleback rock hills rising from endless scrub, reservoir shores stalked by elephants (several hundred live here), and hardly another vehicle in sight. History surprises at the dam itself, where excavations revealed an ancient sluice built perhaps two thousand years ago - proof the old engineers tamed this river first. The park borders Dambana, homeland of the Vedda people, and combining a safari with a community visit is the most natural pairing in the country. Access is easiest from Mahiyangana or Polonnaruwa; facilities are minimal, adventure quotient high.
