About Batticaloa

Batticaloa - 'Batti' to everyone - is the cultural heart of the Tamil east coast, a city wrapped around a vast, island-dotted lagoon. Its compact 17th-century Dutch fort still stands at the lagoon's edge, and the town moves at bicycle pace past churches, kovils, and mosques that share the same streets. Batticaloa's most curious claim is its 'singing fish': on quiet full-moon nights, a faint musical hum rises from the lagoon near Kallady bridge, a phenomenon never conclusively explained. The beaches - Kallady and Pasikuda to the north - are long, empty, and beautiful, and the lagoon itself is best explored by fishing canoe at dawn. Few foreign travellers linger here, which is exactly why those who do fall for it.
