Kurunegala, hub of the north-west, wears its geology like a crown: the city is ringed by massive bare gneiss outcrops named centuries ago for the animals they resemble - Elephant Rock (Athugala), Tortoise Rock, Eel Rock, and more - which legend says were beasts turned to stone for drinking a drought-stricken city's water. For a brief, turbulent half-century (1284–1341) this was the capital of the island, seat of four kings whose palace and Tooth Relic temple traces survive near the clock tower. Today's essential Kurunegala experience is the climb (or drive) up Athugala at dusk: a huge white seated Buddha crowns the elephant's back, and the view sweeps the city, its glinting lake, and coconut country rolling to the horizon. With Yapahuwa's carved fortress stair forty minutes north and the silver-temple caves of Ridi Viharaya nearby, Kurunegala anchors an excellent off-circuit heritage day.
