Bomburu Ella, tucked into the Uva-Paranagama hills south-east of Nuwara Eliya, is celebrated as the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka: rather than a single plunge, the Uma Oya's headwaters spill over a broad rock brow in a dozen braided cascades, forming a white curtain roughly fifty metres across and thirty high. The falls are reached by an easy, pretty 1.5-kilometre trail from Perawella village - across a hanging bridge, past vegetable terraces and eucalyptus, with the roar building around each bend. The plunge area is a chaos of spray and boulders; paddling in the shallow outflow is popular, though the main pools demand caution. Because it sits off the classic tourist loop, Bomburu Ella draws more local picnickers than foreign visitors - go on a weekday morning and you may share the curtain of water with no one at all.
