About Wilpattu National Park
Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, sprawling across 1,317 km² of dense dry-zone forest in the island's north-west. Its name means 'land of lakes', after the dozens of villus - shallow, rain-fed natural lakes fringed with open grassy banks - scattered through the jungle. Wildlife gathers at these villus to drink, making them natural theatres for spotting leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, and mugger crocodiles. Because Wilpattu receives a fraction of Yala's visitors, safaris here feel wilder and more intimate: you can drive for an hour through cathedral-like forest without seeing another jeep. May and June, when the palu trees fruit, are famously the best months to see sloth bears. The park also holds deep history - Kudiramalai Point on its coast is linked to the legendary landing of Prince Vijaya over 2,500 years ago.
