Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the beating heart of Tamil Hindu Sri Lanka: a vast temple to Lord Murugan whose golden ochre walls, towering gopurams, and long colonnaded halls anchor the northern capital's spiritual life. A shrine has stood at Nallur since at least the 15th-century kings of Jaffna; razed by the Portuguese, it was refounded in 1734 and has grown ever since into the island's most magnificent kovil complex. Daily pujas are full-sensory events - nadaswaram horns and thavil drums, camphor flame, and crowds circling the sanctum - but the temple's superlative is its Aadi festival: twenty-five days each July–August of processions, chariots, kavadi dancers, and devotional intensity that draw the Tamil diaspora home from around the world, culminating in the great Ther chariot day when hundreds of thousands fill the streets.
