About Jaffna Fort
Jaffna Fort has commanded the lagoon since 1618: founded by the Portuguese and comprehensively rebuilt by the Dutch after 1658 into a five-pointed star of coral-and-limestone ramparts - among the largest and finest Dutch fortifications in Asia. Its later history is the peninsula's in miniature: British garrison, then a quarter-century as a besieged strongpoint whose churches and Governor's residence were pounded to fragments during the civil war. Restoration since has returned the walls, gates, and moat to walkable dignity while preserving the scars honestly - the shattered shell of the Dutch church stays as witness. Today the fort belongs to Jaffna's evenings: families promenade the ramparts, cricket occupies the glacis, couples watch the sun drop into the lagoon from the bastions, and the archaeology museum by the gate fills in four centuries. Free, breezy, and layered - the essential first stop in the northern capital.
